Isaac Colin Brown, was born August 4, 1903 in Louisville, Kentucky, and Clarissa Belle Davis, on April 20, 1904 in Clarksville, Tennessee. They received a Marriage License in Jeffersonville, Clark, Indiana on March 17, 1923. Listed on their Marriage License were Isaac's parents, Isaac Brown and Angelina Williams, and Clarissa's parents, Lucy B. Davis (nee January), born c. 1868 in Tennessee, and Charles H. Davis, born c. 1866 in Tennessee.
On the 1900 Census, Clarissa's parents Charles and Lucy are shown to have been married 11 years, and were living in Clarksville City, Tennessee in a rented home. Charles is listed as a "day laborer". Lucy was listed as a tobacco stemmer, (one who removes tobacco leaf material from the stems). Living with them were their children Bertie L., age 6, Van, 3, Elizabeth, 10 months old, and a Hannah B. Claxton, listed as "daughter," 14 years old with an occupation of "nurse". Charles' birthdate is listed as 1861, Lucy's as 1870.
On the 1910 Census, Charles and Lucy are listed as 44 and 42 years old, shown as renting their home, and living with five children: Annie, aged 22 who worked as a cook for a private family, Bertie D., aged 16, Van, 13, Elizabeth, 10, and Clarissa B, aged 6. Everyone was listed as Mulatto, and everyone could read and write.
On the 1920 Census, Charles and Lucy are listed as 59 and 52 years of age. The only child living with Charles and Lucy was Clarissa, aged 15. Everyone was listed as Black. Charles was listed as a laborer in a foundry.
The 1930 Census Charles and Lucy Davis are listed as 67 and 62 years of age. They resided with their son Van D. Davis, his wife Nannie (nee Buler), and their newborn son Van Jr., in Louisville City, Jefferson County, Kentucky, at 412 Caldwell Street. They rented their home for $20. per month. Charles worked as a "laborer" for a plumbing company. Van as a "laborer" in a garage.
Isaac 26, and Clarissa 25, are shown on the 1930 Census renting their home at 1532 E. 50th Street in Los Angeles for $25. a month. Living with them were their four children: Isaac W. (known as Isaac Douglas "I.D."), 6, Annie L., 5, Charles M., 4.5, and Willie B. (Willard Burdett) 6 mos. of age. Isaac was working as a janitor in a laundry.
The 1940 Census showed Isaac (age 36) and Clarissa Brown (age 36) living with their nine children in Los Angeles, at 9608 So. Central Avenue, in a home that they owned, which was valued at $1000. on the census. Isaac was employed as a gardener, working for the WPA (The Federal Works Progress Administration).
The children of Isaac and Clarissa, listed on the 1940 Census were: Isaac D. 16, Annie L. 16, Charles 14, Willard 10, Ercil 6, Mary V. 5, Paul 4, Timothy 2, and Lee D. newborn. Isaac and Clarissa's as yet unborn children Robert A., and David C. were not listed on the 1940 Census.
